Afterglow

Afterglow performing at The Cluny. Newcastle - 1st June 2002

When Formed...
Afterglow are from Middlesbrough in the North East of England and were formed in late 2000 by Bazza. Drummer Tony The Tiger was the first to join after he replied to an advert Bazza had placed in the AD-Mag. Bazza quicky recruited Carlos, although the line up wasn't complete until Johnny Rock joined in January 2001. They were all ready for a new challenge; sick of seeing other live bands thrash away for 45 minutes ... forgetting the tunes ... the melodies ... the audience.

Afterglow open up Middlesbrough Music Live 2002 Afterglow made their live debut at the Dickens Inn, Middlesbrough on 5th April 2001 as part of the Z-Fest tour. Tony was replaced by Ian Lowes (Thee Strawberry Mynde & Uncovered) in Febuary 2002 for the "You Knew" recording session. Then Henry Carden became Afterglow's full time drummer in March 2002.

Previous Bands...
Johnny Rock and Carlos Fandango, had previously been in the Indie band 'Bite'
Henry was in 'Gerbil Bob', 'Room 13', 'Who Ate Tim?' and also drums for 'Billy Got Fired'.
Bazza has been in the Garage/Mod band 'Thee Strawberry Mynde', Ska band 'G-Men', 'The Sealclubbers' - although his name is not credited on their 1991 single "Yellow & Magenta" and 'The Alternative' - which also featured Carlos and was formed way back in 1986, whilst both at Nunthorpe school.

Live...
With Bazza throbbing his way along the fretboard, Carlos screeching at every opportunity, Henry bangin' & crashin' the pots and pans and Johnny blabbing like some long-lost stand up. Afterglow really are something different! Our music veers widely from the nu-blues of "Money" to the pure Americana of "Somebody Told Me I Had A Bad Memory (But I Can't Remember Who It Was)".

Afterglow at Fibbers, York - 1st May 2002 Gig Superstitions...
Johnny: physically shrinks as the set goes on until he resembles a young Napolean!

Carlos: Wears a hat to cover up his Mexican (silver) roots! Henry: Hides behind a cymbal all gig!

Bazza: Only wears clothes previously owned by members of the Small Faces!

Discography...
'60s Song' was included on the compilation CD 'Shake' (Biff Bang Pow Records) 2003.
'Of Heart & Soul' was included on the Shmables/Manual Scan tribute
'Forty One Sixty' (Blindspot Records) 2009.

Afterglow split up on 28th July 2002 when Johnny Rock moved to Northern Ireland. After Afterglow Bazza went on to form The Che Men whose line up at one point also included ex-Afterglow guitarist Carlos Fandango and drummer Ian Lowes. The Che Men have featured on a number of compilations - 'A Flame That Can't Be Dimmed' (Red Star. 2003), 'Red Strike The Blues' (Red Star. 2005), 'This Is R.A.S.H.
