Fallen Phoenix - Miles Behind But Streets Ahead
Middlesbrough 5 piece Fallen Phoenix serve up a 6 song platter on their first extended player.
Very much in the classic rock vein, with nods & touches to the Stadium rockers of the 80's - thankfully without the spandex pants (hopefully at least). - We are treated to some really great songs.
The opening track "Me & You" being a particular highlight, showing that a rock band can write & perform good, solid catchy pop songs.
Midnight; the 2nd track, is a more traditional rock affair with low slung guitars & 16th bass, sounding not unlike The Cult.
"But You Remain" is a slow ballad like number that gently rises to a fantastic guitar riff and an almost sea shanty/terrace refrain of "way oh" - a beautifully crafted song by anyone's standards.
"It Hurts" again sees us back into the more familiar classic rock territory, with a great lead guitar hook in the chorus, which leads to "1984"the penultimate track, which stays in the Sabbath rock style.
Slowing right down for the final track "If There's A God" is an acoustic guitar led number with heartfelt vocals, but some rather odd sounding piano during the chorus.
Fallen Phoenix is a great band and definitely need to be seen live. The songs are finely crafted and are very good indeed; unfortunately the production values on the Demo doesn't do the band justice.
