The Cherie Gears Band at The Teal Arms, Ingleby Barwick
We got a rare treat at The Teal Arms last Thursday evening. We arrived to find the Teal has started a regular Thursday band night. First up was The Cherie Gears band. Fronted by Cherie Gears accompanied by Sam Kelly the duet kicked off the evening with the classic Ain't no Sunshine. When we say a rare treat that is exactly what we mean. This girl knocks spots of many of the new female artists popular at the moment. What she is doing singing in a pub is beyond us. Cherie delivered her performance with a clarity unusual in acoustic performers. If you closed your eyes you could well have believed it was a CD playing not a live performance.
The first set consisted of many more much loved jazz, funk and soul numbers, Moondance, Easy, Fever .... the selection was varied and received with much appreciation from the audience. Sam played exceptionally well, a true professional, he and Cherie complimented each other perfectly.
At half time we had a quick chat with Sam and Cherie, hailing from the Teesside area originally, Cherie now lives in Leeds and has just graduated from Leeds College of Music. Currently she is working as a freelance musician and along with The Cherie Gears Band she is also lead singer in an origianl band Lazy Baby along with Sam, Chris Glanville, Lee Walker and Steve Drinkwater. Lazy Baby are due to hit the Leeds live music scene shortly with their selection of original material. Cherie told us that to put Lazy Baby into a category of music style was difficult. She described the band as being commercial rock with undertones of jazz, funk and soul - all the things the band loves best! Lazy Baby have put a lot of work into writing new material over the last few months and will certainly be ones to watch out for in the near future.
The second set was as brilliant as the first, as well as their planned set list Cherie and Sam were happy to perform several requested songs much to the delight of the Teal Arms audience. The highlight of the evening for me was the haunting rendition of Summertime. Overall we would strongly recommend seeing this band and watch out for Lazy Baby. To sum up the evening takes one word - Outstanding. For more information or to get in touch with The Cherie Gears Band please visit their website Here.
