Skulduggery

Skulduggery

Skulduggery was the first band to be formed within the newly created Stockton Music and Arts Collective in May 1990. At the time they consisted of Martyn Littlefair (lead vocals, guitar), Craig "Mod" Steward (bass), Adam Shann (keyboards) and also featured Carol Littlefair and Wendy Clough (backing vocals.)

They made their debut at the International Garden Festival's music stage in Gateshead in June 1990 and were soon cutting a six track demo' "In a Bygone Age of Skulduggery" at Studio '64, Middlesbrough. For this recording they were joined by Andy Lewis on drums who was on loan from fellow Collective band, The Suspectives.

Skulduggery Andy subsequently drummed for them at live shows until October when he returned to his own band, taking Adam and Wendy with him. Unfortunately the band were due to record three tracks for the Collective's forthcoming compilation release. Andy agreed to drum once more on this release and the band were further augmented by Carol Lee (keyboard) from The DNA Cowboys and "Sala" (lead guitar) from Heatwave.

Throughout 1991 the band went through no less than twenty three members and two name changes ( The Volstead Act, Beyond the Catflap.). The most notable musicians of this period were John Robson (lead guitar), Alan Murray (drums), Mike Russell (lead guitar), Neil Iceton (bass) and Pip Eames (drums.)

It was nor until May 1992 that the name was changed back to Skulduggery and Martyn was rejoined by John Robson (lead guitar.) Newcomers Andy Pointon (bass) and Mark Parker (drums) completed the new line-up. This was to be the band's most enduring and successful incarnation, lasting two and a half years. That year they recorded the ten-track, "Taking All Night."

The band ceased to exist with Martyn's departure in October 1994. The rest of them continued for a while as The Motive, a covers band, but eventually they went their separate ways..

The band had originally been formed as a vehicle for Marty Littlefair's compositions and he was responsible for ninety-nine per-cent of their output, only allowing two covers in their (very nearly) four and a half year lifespan.
