Uncle Gilbert played the Sportsman, Eaglescliffe on Saturday 26th April and we went along to check them out.
We had heard great reports about this trio and we weren't disappointed. This band has been going since 1993 with a few changes in line-up along the way. Uncle Gilbert played to a full house at the Sportsman - which incidentally is a cracking venue we had not visited before - and the audience enjoyed a full set of tunes from the likes of The Cult, AC-DC, Billy Idol, ZZ Top and a flawless cover of Santana's version of The Zombies classic, She's not There, to name but a few. The highlight of the evening for me personally was a fantastic rendition of Gary Moores Still got the Blues, which they played to perfection.
Its always a great pleasure to watch a seasoned, well rehearsed band perform but these guys have to be among the best we have seen. Any young bands out there should go along and catch Uncle Gilbert play, not only for an excellent night out and great music, but also for a lesson in sound levels which were perfect. Dave on drums literally didn't miss a beat throughout the evening and demonstrated great tempo and some fantastic, understated stickwork. Michael amazed us all with his suberb guitar playing which in our opinion is up there with the very best. Brian not only took the lead vocally in the majority of the songs he was also rock steady on the bass, a true professional.
To sum up last nights show, the band were tight, well rehearsed and the sound and sheer quality of music was excellent. Uncle Gilbert's reputation is not only well deserved but perhaps understated.
